New Committees announced

At the Vestry meeting January 17th, it was decided to form two new committees. The first is the Building and Grounds committee, which is to be a help to the Junior Warden in upkeep of our property. The second is a committee for outreach to grow the parish.

Flower Power

Just a note to parishoners: Please sign up for the chance to give flowers on a Sunday. There is a sign up sheet at the foot of the stairs and it would be very appreciated for everyone to participate.
Christmas greenery and flower donations are welcome. A suggested donation for poinsettias is $12, and you can take the flower home after Christmas. Just mark Flowers on the memo line of your check.

Youth Group

The youth group helped shop, assemble and deliver Thanksgiving baskets. Christmas donations were done by Giant Gift card through the mail due to the snow. Next youth group project will be posted here.

Church of the Ascension Goes to Green Power

Beginning in April 2009, the first month that consumers served by Dominion Virginia Power were offered the opportunity, the Church of the Ascension committed to buying 100% renewable energy. By making this decision we are supporting the development of renewable energy. The difference in cost is $0.015 per Kilowatt hour, which amounts to a less than $10 increase for an average monthly bill. We are committed to being good stewards of the earth. This was arranged by John Lord, our Treasurer. Please thank him the next time you see him for his committment to being a good steward, and for leading us all in this direction.

Civil War Trails Marker

There is a newspaper article in the West County Chronicle about the unveiling of the Civil War Trails marker at the Church of the Ascension during the Centreville Days.

“On Saturday, September 16, at 1 p.m. at the Church of the Ascension (Old Stone Church) located at 13941 Braddock Road in Centreville, a historical marker will be officially unveiled in the Centreville Historic District by Sully District Supervisor Michael Frey and Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Gerry Connolly.”

“Volunteers who are interested in preserving the Centreville Historic District or wish to contribute copies of letters their ancestors wrote from Centreville during the Civil War, can contact the Friends of Historic Centreville at www.SaveCentrevilleHistory.org or by calling Craig T. Monroe at 703-628 5097.”

Civil War Trails Marker

The new Civil War Trails marker will be installed near the entrance to the Church of the Ascension on Wednesday morning, July 19, at about 10:00 am. I will be on hand to watch the installation. Anyone else who wants to come and watch are welcome.

The sign will be marked on the “Civil War Trails” brochures, and the marker will tell some of the story of how our church was used as a hospital during the Civil War, especially during the nearby battles of Manassas and Blackburn’s Ford. The sign will be positioned so that drivers can read the sign without leaving their car.

The Civil War Trails sign will continue to be the property of the Civil War Trails organization. Thus, if it is ever damaged or defaced, they will maintain it. And they have promised to take it away if we no longer want it.

This will bring some publicity to the part our church building, and the town of Centreville, played during the Civil War, and will bring more tourist traffic and more tourist dollars to our community. Because of that, the costs for installing and erecting the sign have been paid for by other Centreville history organizations. There is no cost to the church.

On Saturday, September 16th, during “Centreville Days,” we will have an official unveiling and/or ribbon cutting of the marker. The church will be open to visitors during that day, and we hope that members of our congregation and our neighborhood will be on hand to celebrate with us this long overdue recognition of Centreville and our local history.

Our thanks for the planning and completion of this effort goes out to Mitch Bowman of the Civil War Trails, and to Mike Fleming, Dennis Hogge, Melanie Johnson, Craig Monroe, Cheryl-Ann Repetti, and to all the members of the “Friends of Historic Centreville” who have contributed so much of their time and talents over the past year to this effort.

The Friends of Historic Centreville meets on the second Tuesday of each month, and has as their mission statement:

“Being committed to the preservation and promotion of the resources of the Centreville Historic District and the conservation of its land and scenic values, we seek to advocate for the needs and future of the Historic District, to foster fund-raising efforts and grants for preservation and restoration projects, and maintain a working relationship with the Centreville Historic Society, the Fairfax County History Commission and Fairfax County Agencies, to complement the efforts of all those working for the greater good of Centreville’s Historic District.”
